Backgrounder:
This thought-provoking event will consider the effectiveness of a European initiative in the search for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. In the aftermath of the Hanoi Summit negotiations in 2019, the DPRK leadership expressed a loss of trust in exclusive negotiations with the United States, citing the potential changes in policy with each electoral cycle. They aspire to a durable agreement akin to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal with Iran, which continued despite the US Government's withdrawal.
Hon. Glyn Ford, a former MEP and a prominent DPRK expert, initiated a process that led to the EU delivering significant humanitarian relief during the years of famine in North Korea. Based on his substantially more than a decade long Track 1.5 dialogue with the DPRK, he believes that European involvement in the search for peace on the Korean Peninsula, would be welcomed in North Korea.
As we contemplate the potential European role in Korean Peninsula peace efforts, we must address critical questions. Who could take the lead? Do European leaders possess the capacity to invest in such an initiative amid global conflicts that are taking so much of our attention.
We eagerly anticipate your participation in this webinar, contributing to the dialogue on the potential impact of European nations in shaping a peaceful future for the Korean Peninsula.
We are looking forward to your response, whether you will be able to participate in this event.
