Malcolm is a larger-than-life figure in the worlds of filmmaking, war and medicine. In 2011, he had a routine yellow fever shot at a clinic near his home in Athens where he was then living as a foreign correspondent. He was due to travel to the Ivory Coast in West Africa to shoot a series of films about child soldiers. Within eighteen hours, he was burning up with violent fever that lasted for thirteen days. From there, he descended into madness. Hallucinations convinced him he is the new Messiah and his Second Coming had to be broadcast on television. With incredible insight, his wife, Trine Villemann, filmed Malcolm’s horrendous experience and, when recovered they turned into an acclaimed documentary Malcolm is a Little Unwell, - both a paean to love and family, and a unique window into mental illness.

His purpose and his passion for more than forty years has been telling the news, reporting on crises from more than eighty countries. He is one of the original one-man-band television crews, filming, editing and reporting from trouble spots and since 2015 has been the special correspondent in Europe for the American PBS Newshour show. He is also the co-author of the New York Times best-seller The Daughter of Auschwitz with Tova Friedman, one of the youngest people to emerge from the Nazi concentration camps, having witness atrocities she can never forget. Malcolm’s grit is surviving madness. His purpose is to report the news. And his passion lies in telling a good story.

Join him in conversation with Humphrey Hawksley on Goldster Purpose, Passion and Grit Monday 15th May 2023. This will be a live streamed event from Riverstone, Fulham.
