A new series by acclaimed historical novelist, Peter Tonkin, brings us into the heart of Elizabethan intrigue, power struggles and local colour. Beginning in 1599, The Shadow of the Axe richly imagines Queen Elizabeth’s court in its twilight years with plots to unseat the monarchy. In 1603, there follows The Shadow of the Tower where, even on her death bed, Queen Elizabeth refuses to name a successor. Tonkin is the author of dozens of novels. He published 34 while working as a teacher of English, History and Law. He retired in 2016, and has embarked on several new series, including one set in Rome, Caesar’s Spies with The Ides, Cicero Dies and three others. Tonkin is also a key member of Aspects of History, a Goldster partner whose top line is The past isn’t dead, it isn’t even past. This is the trade of Hilary Mantel, C. J Samson and Robert Graves. But Peter Tonkin is a brilliant story-teller across many genres. For his earlier yet more present day Richard Mariner series Tonkin has been praised by the late Clive Cussler as “master of the seagoing adventure.”
