Michael Coveney has written about theatre as editor of Plays and Players magazine and staff critic, successively, on the Financial Times, the Observer and the Daily Mail. His books include The Citz; The Aisle is Full of Noises; Questors, Jesters and Renegades and critical biographies of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mike Leigh, Ken Campbell and Maggie Smith. His latest work is Master of the House: The Theatres of Cameron Mackintosh a lavishly Illustrated and compelling account of one of the world’s leading theatrical producers of musicals such as Cats, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Mary Poppins and Oliver! He is also a significant theatre owner and has completed a two-decade campaign of refurbishing and rebuilding eight London theatres.
This has set the tempo for maintaining one of Britain’s most treasured cultural heritages into the next century as well as ensuring the future of the great British artists who appear in them. Master of the House charts the fascinating history of his eight historic London buildings – their origins, their iconic shows and productions, the stars and the glamour. In conversation with Humphrey Hawksley Michael Coveney will put into focus these theatres’ vital role in the history of British theatre over the last 100 years and reveal more of his career as chronicler of creative Britain, its arts, buildings, tensions and stars.
