Chatting about Slum Dogs, writers from India and walking the celebrity carpet to the Oscar stage in Hollywood.
From 12.00 noon BST
At Goldster Book Club
Vikas Swarup is a very recently retired very senior Indian diplomat. He has been High Commissioner to Canada and the official spokesperson for the Indian foreign ministry and a consul-general in Japan. So what has any of that got to do with a Goldster Book Chat, you might ask. Well, do you remember an Oscar-winning movie called Slum Dog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle. Its original title was Q & A, about a boy from the Indian slums who wins a quiz show and I have here a first edition copy signed by all the important people at the London book launch. And the author is Vikas Swarup. He went on to write Six Suspects which is being made into a television series and The Accidental Apprentice about a shop assistant who is asked to become the head of a huge business conglomerate. And now that Vikas has left his day job, I suspect more blockbusters are on their way.
Join me, Humphrey Hawksley, your Goldster Book Chat host on Friday October 8th , chatting to Vikas Swarup about Slum Dogs, writers from India and walking the celebrity carpet to the Oscar stage in Hollywood.
