Join Humphrey Hawksley in conversation with John Whitwell, a reflection on life in child care. John begun his career in child care at the pioneering Cotswold Community becoming the principal in 1985. During his time here John worked alongside inspirational colleagues and consultants such as Richard Balbernie, Barbara Dockar-Drysdale and Isabel Menzies Lyth. Following this John became the managing director of the UK’s first independent fostering agency (Integrated Services Programme) developing therapeutic care in family setting settings. He qualified as a Group Psychotherapist and was a member of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and a trustee of Gloucester Counselling Service, the Planned Environment Trust and the Mulberry Bush Organisation.
The talk will include a conversation around the following areas:
- The principles of therapeutic care
- The place of psychodynamic theory in residential child care and foster care
- The therapeutic potential of relationships and how this can be realised
- Creating community to nurture healing, recovery and development
Attendees of the live event will also be able to submit questions to John throughout the talk.
