Germany felt aggrieved after the First World War, as Russia does after the Cold War. Germany took 20 years to rebuild its confidence and muscle, as has Russia. In March 1938, Germany took Austria, as Russia did Crimea in March 2014. In October 1938, Germany took part of Czechoslovakia on the grounds of protecting German speakers, as Russia is now doing in Ukraine. Over the next year Germany’s dictatorial institutions consolidated power and in September 1939 it tested international alliances by invading Poland, thus leading to the Second World War . Therefore, after Ukraine will Russia test NATO — probably by moving into one of the Baltic states? And What then?
