The Egyptian question lays on how to absorb autocratic institutions into the democratic tent. Little wonder the Muslim Brotherhood, banned for so, so many years, struggled against an impatient electorate and army generals, several of whom have had the benefit of US and West Point education. In 1930s Germany, the legally elected Nazi party became the absolute dictatorship. In 1990s post-Cold War Europe communist parties played their part in elections and institution-building as do Islamic parties in, say, Indonesia. Egypt’s latest worrying twist has shades of Pakistan in the 1970s.
