A packed house for the Commonwealth Journalists’ Association launch of Patrick French’s new book — India, A Potrait. While Patrick and others described it as a celebration of India, the discussion quickly (and with lustrous predictability) rushed headlong towards Pakistan and the Kashmir dispute. This was revealing in itself because India has gathered up its history to become a forward-looking economic and cultural beacon. There may be parts of that in Pakistan, but the country continues to slide happily backwards to wallow in suspicion, insurgency and natural disasters. The problem for us is that while India eyes the UN security council and G20 and BRIC leadership, Pakistan stays friends with North Korea and too many elements of extreme Islam. How in Earth will it all end?
