Diplomatic space to avert conflict and propel peace has been created on the Korean Peninsular. North Korea appears to be reviving its 5 MWe experimental reactor at Yongbyon which could produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. But scientists say it will be at least four years before the first tranches of plutonium are ready for use. Nuclear weapons give North Korea a sense of dignity, but what Kim Jung-un really wants, it seems, is a basktball game. There’s plenty of time to get that underway. Chemical weapons out of Syria and nuclear from North Korea must be a goal worth waiting for.
