I’m in Moscow and face to face with an interesting idea. Earlier this year, the US intervened in a Taiwanese referendum to stop the Chinese breakaway province from proclaiming independence. Too much else was at stake with China, to allow Taiwan’s new democracy to wish for too much. The same is likely to happen with Georgia. As things are now settling, Russia and the West are working out the real politik, while Georgia’s young leadership realise that the cries of democracy, freedom and will of the people only go so far when wedged between powerful nations. Taiwan ended up voting in the pro-China party. Who will get voted in in Georgia’s next election?
