The UN’s International Labour Organisation reports that modern day slavery uses 21 million people who illegally generate a staggering US$150 billion year for big business, often under threat of extreme violence. Most are in South Asia where one form of excercising fear is to rape a mother and wife in front of her family to keep everyone in line. The victims work in the construction, cotton and other industries many of which are now directly entwined with multi-nationals and the global economy. Slavery was defined in a 1926 UN convention, clarified in 1956 and has been banned in India since 1976. It is not difficult to walk into a cotton or brick factory and find adults and children, diseased, injured, malnourished and working. Is there any multi-national out there with any initiative to end slavery? The one’s I’ve spoken to won’t engage.
