Cuba & Haiti

An fascinating blog discussion followed my BBC Five Live interview with Rhod Sharpe on Wednesday Sept 22nd on Democracy Kills.

Contributors ask why I chose to compare Cuba to Haiti — instead of Thailand to Burma or North and South Korea — where the democratic systems have delivered a far high quality of life than the dictatorships.

These are good questions — answered in full in the the book Democracy Kills – What’s So Good About Having The Vote? .

Contributors might also ask why noone in Haiti or anywhere else in the Caribbean chooses to enter Cuba and why so many people in Cuba, despite its supposed material advantages adumbrated by Mr Hawksley, wish to leave. In the end, however comfortable the house may be noone likes living under house arrest.

This is exactly the view of a great Cuban figure Hector Palacios (P227 Democracy Kills)

I ask:- “What is the most important to you — free medicine or free speech?”

“I don’t want health without freedom,” he says. “That is the main thing for a human being and for mankind.”

I will bet you that after the mourning period for Fidel is over, a very high ranking leader of China will be making a trip to Panama and Cuba in no time. China, sadly, has become the poster child of the new model — capitalism but no democracy. The Soviet failed the export since they had to bankroll their model, but China doesn’t have to do that…

It may also give the military authority the power to act in place of civilian authorities, if a decree specifies it explicitly. ,
