In the past couple of years, Europe has adopted stark parallels to the 1930s, and we would be crazy not to take more careful note. Throughout the continent, moderate governing parties are having to cut deals with right-wing nationalist movements which are being strengthened election after election. Britain is currently governed under this formula. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is being hoisted onto a pedestal and vilified as the global monster to be stopped at all costs — just as Joseph Stalin was in the 1930s. Europe’s collapse began when rising Fascism became an acceptable alternative to Communism, and Hitler and Mussolini were seen as the buffers that would stop the expanding reach of Stalin. There are parallels in timing, too. Fascism took hold after the 1929 Wall Street crash resulting in austerity and unemployment, just as European nationalism gathered pace after the 2007 financial crisis and an onset of hard times. The Second World War followed after which the European Union was set up to ensure such savagery and tribalism was never allowed to take hold again. This war-prevention project has now been weakened, probably beyond repair, with Britain taking the lead, spurred on by the Daily Mail and privileged figures stripped straight from the 1930s mindset like Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg. All of this delivers a conundrum to us run-of-the-mill voters. There was once a sense that Britain had a viable, forward-thinking centre ground party in the Liberal Democrats. The past two years have proved this is not to be case. They appear to have neither the vision nor the determination or management structure to do the business. This leaves us essentially with a 1930s choice of whether to go for Labour and its strands to the 21st Century equivalent of communism or the Conservatives who are far too close to the unsavoury trend of extremist nationalism. Or not to vote at all. Or we could help reform and revive the European Union. Or wait until it all falls apart and amid cries of patriotism and defending our islands, send our sons and daughters off to get slaughtered once again in a stupid European war.
